What we don't handle on underground jobs
- Lawn re-seeding or full landscaping restoration (we restore grade only)
- Replacement tank installation (we coordinate with HVAC contractors if you're staying on oil)
- Soil remediation if significant contamination is found — that requires a separate Phase II ESA
- Indoor floor or wall repair if access required cutting drywall or concrete (rare)
- Removal of fuel oil lines inside the house beyond what's needed to disconnect the tank
What underground oil tank removal costs in HRM
Most underground (buried) oil tank removals in HRM run $1,500–$3,000. The big variables:
- Excavator access: a tank in an open backyard is cheap to reach. A tank with the house, a fence, and a neighbour's hedge between it and the street is harder.
- Depth: shallower tanks are quicker.
- Soil contamination: clean soil is at the low end of the range. Contaminated soil triggers additional remediation costs.
- Backfill volume: larger tanks need more clean fill.
We give you a written quote after a site visit — no hidden fees. If we find soil contamination during the dig, we stop, discuss options, and quote any additional work before continuing.
Our underground tank removal process, step by step
- Call us at (902) 912-2483 and tell us roughly where the tank is and when your insurer's deadline (if any) lands.
- Site visit + written quote. Usually within 48 hours of your call. We mark the suspected tank location, note access constraints, and quote.
- Schedule the dig. Typically 2–4 weeks out depending on excavator availability and weather.
- Removal day. One full day on site — excavate, drain, cut, lift, test soil, backfill, restore grade.
- Documentation. Disposal certificate emailed to you. Submit to your insurer or keep for property-sale records.
Why Choose Us for Underground Tank Removal in HRM
- Insurance-deadline-aware scheduling. Many of our jobs are insurer-mandated. We work backwards from the deadline.
- Honest contamination handling. If we find dirty soil, you'll know the same day — not a surprise bill three weeks later.
- Licensed waste disposal. All recovered oil goes to a provincially licensed facility. Documentation comes with the job.
- Heat-pump conversion coordination. If you're switching to a heat pump under the Efficiency Nova Scotia program, we time the dig so your contractor isn't waiting.
