Aboveground Oil Tank Removal in Halifax & HRM

Aboveground oil tanks — whether sitting in your basement, on a stand outside the house, or in an outbuilding — are the simpler removal job. No excavation needed. We drain, cut, remove, and dispose, usually in a single visit. Most of our aboveground jobs in Halifax and Dartmouth happen as part of an oil-to-heat-pump conversion or because the tank failed its insurance inspection.

Aboveground Oil Tank Removal — FAQ

How much does aboveground oil tank removal cost in Halifax?
Most aboveground tank removals in HRM run $400–$1,200. The drivers: tank size (a standard 275-gallon basement tank is at the low end; a larger outdoor tank or 500-gallon model trends higher), access (basement tanks behind narrow stairs add labour), and whether the fuel lines and chimney are also being decommissioned. Call (902) 912-2483 for a written quote.
Can you remove a tank from my basement?
Yes — basement tank removals are routine for us. We bring floor protection (plywood, tarps), drain residual oil into approved containers on-site, disconnect the supply line, and cut the tank into manageable pieces if it can't fit through the stairwell. Cleanup includes a wipe-down of the tank pad and minor staining. We do not patch drywall or repaint — that's on you or your trades.
Do I need to be home during the removal?
Yes — we need access to the tank location plus a final walkthrough at the end. Most aboveground jobs are 2–4 hours on site, so it's usually half a day.
How long does an aboveground tank removal take?
Typically 2–4 hours on site for a standard residential tank. Larger tanks or harder-access locations (e.g. narrow basement stairs, tank in a tight outbuilding) take longer. We give you a time estimate with the written quote.
What happens to the fuel oil still in the tank?
It is drained on site and disposed of at a licensed NS facility. We drain residual oil into approved containers and dispose of it under the NS Fuel Safety Act and CSA B-139. A disposal certificate comes with the job and can be submitted to your insurer or kept for property records.
Will you also remove my old oil furnace?
No — furnace removal is a separate job we don't handle. Oil furnaces involve electrical disconnection, flue/chimney decommissioning, and HVAC trade work that's outside our scope. We refer to HVAC contractors and can coordinate timing if you're converting to a heat pump under the Efficiency Nova Scotia program. Call (902) 912-2483 if you need a referral.
